Process of Vacuum Metallizing

Several processes are usually involved in the metallization process which includes coating, metallizing, thermal spraying, vacuum metallizing, vacuum deposition, and metalation. Coating is where the surface of an object is covered to help in enhancing appearance, adhesion, reducing corrosion and scratches and wear. Metalizing involves various processes used in treatment, coating or just combination with a metal. In thermal metallization, heat is involved to melt a substance that is then sprayed on the surface of another object. Metalation involves reacting two substances where one is a metal that has carbon in it forming an organometallic compound with another organic compound. Placing very thin layers of a substance on an object in a vacuum is referred to as thermal deposition process. Vacuum metalizing is the process of coating an object with a metal where the process takes place in a vacuum chamber.

Vacuum metalizing process is carried out in a vacuum chamber where the metal used in the coating is heated to its boiling point where the metal forms vapour. The vaporized metal is then allowed to condense while settling on the surface of the object to be coated. Resistance heating and electron beam are some of the heating techniques that are used in heating and vaporizing the metal used for coating. Resistance heating involves passing an electric current through the metal where the current experiences resistance hence heats the metal. Electron beam uses cathode rays which emit negative cathodes in a vacuum tube producing heat. Vacuum metallization of objects is used to decorate the objects, protect the object from wear and tear and also to enhance the functions of that object such as increasing the conductivity of poor electrical conductor materials.

Benefits of vacuum metalizing are immeasurable. Vacuum metalizing has little or no health effects on the users and it produces a uniform layer of polish on the surface of an object. This is because there some compound and metals that are highly toxic to living organism hence users are protected from coming into contact with them. Vacuum metalizing helps in producing highly durable metals that are not likely to contact water as well as air which triggers rusting in metals. Vacuum metalizing is also an environmentally friendly process reducing the amount of carbon released into the atmosphere.

Ensuring the value of an object is maintained is key in the vacuum metallizing process hence precaution measures should be taken to maintain it. Burned parts on the objects indicated by some parts lacking the shiny silver luster, distinct colors on the object as a result of the metal coating being too thin and appearance of rainbow colors on the object may lower the quality of the object. Quality can be maintained by ensuring that all those problems likely to be experienced are prevented.
